The facility in Kemerburgaz, Istanbul, opened two years ago by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, can dispose of an average of three thousand tons of solid waste per day without any pre-treatment and without harming the environment. This has enabled the electricity needs of approximately three million households to be met.
The construction of the facility was carried out by a Turkish consortium consisting of Makyol, ISPA, and Metgün İnşaat, while the technical infrastructure was provided by Hitachi Zosen Inova AG.
FIVE BILLION LIRA IN REVENUE WAS GENERATED
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Waste Incineration and Energy Production Facility disposes of 15 percent of Istanbul's municipal waste without any pre-treatment, incinerating an average of 3,000 tons of solid waste daily using thermal methods, thereby eliminating waste without harming the environment.
This facility generated $200 million, or approximately 5 billion TL, in revenue for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality over two years.
WHY IS ZERO WASTE IMPORTANT?
It is well known how waste problems harm the environment and living creatures.
Here are the benefits of zero waste:
With zero waste, resources are used more efficiently. – Costs are reduced because waste is prevented.
Risks to the environment and living things are reduced.
Excessive cutting of trees is prevented.
There will be a decrease in the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.
Savings are achieved in waste storage areas.
For every 1 ton of glass recycled, 100 liters of petroleum can be saved.
Future generations will inherit a cleaner and more livable planet.
